剧情讲述在漫天烽火的时局，一个爱国青年与一个红歌女展开了一段哀艳动人的乱世情缘。 故事发生在三十年代中国的天津市。当时，「九一八」事件后，日本关东军在华北发动侵略战争，并组织傀儡更府满州国，因北使中国各地的抗日运动如风起云涌，最为激烈。 正在天津南开大学攻读外文的胡启中（黄元申饰），虽然出身封建地主家庭，但思想开放，他怀着爱国爱民的豪情壮志，加入了「外抗强权」的行列，到处游行示威、派传单、贴大字报。 而楚红（黄杏秀饰）则是天津市的红牌歌女，她双亲早逝，出身寒贫，就凭她一副好歌喉及圆滑手腕走红歌坛，但她洁身自爱，虽然有不少达官贵人拜倒石榴裙下，亦不为所动。她碰到启中后，两人双双堕入爱河。 启中接到家信，说老父病危，忙赶返乡下，而家里为他安排童养媳为夫妇。苦于老父病危，启中只好勉强成婚，婚后赶回天津继续学业。 可是爱国运动越搞越激烈，其中一个学生领袖——...。The Once-Lers are told by the owner that they can sit on the wagon and that it had better not move.
