It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。从温州碗窑村来的春枝（马翎雁 饰），只身来到北京。和其他来城里打工的人不同，她来北京是为了能让女儿上一所好学校。 　　春枝成为了艺术史教授何淳安（张洪杰 饰）的保姆，两人看似偶然相识，实则是春枝的“有意为之”。但不想，个性执着、充满活力的春枝，与古板、固执的何教授水火不容，何教授对她异常冷漠，想方设法把她赶出家门。原来，此时的何教授正在遭受人生中最大的打击：不久前，妻子在家中自杀，而他陷入了自责甚而自闭的深渊。 　　何教授的女儿田田在美国工作生活，对父亲的遭遇显得有心无力，因为她自己的婚姻陷入了困境。何教授就这样被“扔”给了突然闯入生活的陌生人——保姆春枝。 　　一个农村女人，一个艺术史教授，两个人的相处是一场不见硝烟的战争。何教授极端排斥外人，春枝则厌烦教授的酸腐气。但她必须在北京立足，并完成她对女儿的承诺。 　　从最初的相互排斥与拒绝，到艰难的沟通，了解对方的伤痛，春枝和何教授，这两个最不可能相处的人，竟然逐渐相互依存。春枝乐观的生活态度，顽强的生命力，对女儿的爱，都无不感染到何教授，让他拥有了走出阴霾与负罪感的勇气。 　　两个年龄、身份、性格、生活南辕北辙的陌生人，从相互抵触、试探、磨合，到适应、接受、相濡以沫，他们依存于那份来之不易的温暖，最终完成了彼此的精神救赎。。
